Clyde – The Diesel Era 1948 – 2000

By David Jehan

Published by The Eveleigh Press

384 pages, A4 size, hard cover, numerous excellent photographs and other illustrations.

This book covers the history of Clyde Engineering from the 1948 signing of an agreement with the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors, through to the break-up of the company and sale to EDI in 2000.

The diesel period for Clyde Engineering shows the five generations of the EMD diesel engine powered locomotive, from the original Bulldog GM, 42, B and S classes through to the 1990s building of the three-phase 4000 class for Queensland. Included are the passenger carriages from the VR Harris cars through to the South Australian 3000/3100 class railcars. Diesel Hydraulic locomotives were a small part of the Government railway systems but the sugar industry in Queensland and Fiji had a need for a reliable product. Clyde Engineering obliged and produced a number of long-term use locomotives.

Clyde also constructed road vehicles and railway rolling stock. This includes some of the early garbage trucks and busses and the many tank wagons and hoppers including Clyde’s involvement with assembling overseas made grain and coal hoppers. The company was also involved in general engineering, which included boilers, pressure vessels, cranes, floating docks, cement industry machinery, bridges and equipment for the steel making industry.
