The
Phoenix Foundry Company of Ballarat began operations in 1856 and was a
manufacturer of mining and other machinery. It also produced over 20
classes of locomotives from 1873 to 1905, building 352 locomotives
for the Victorian Railways, as well as railway carriages and brakevans. Locomotives were also constructed for the Bendigo Tramways, and a number of Phoenix locomotives finished up with contractors or on logging lines.
At its peak the Phoenix Foundry employed nearly 800 people and was the
principal manufacturing industry in Ballarat in its time.
